The original Appleton settlement grew because of the advantages of transportation on the Fox River,  the tremendous water power of the rapids, and its fertile countryside. Today, the rapid Fox River, including a 33-foot fall within Appleton's city limits, generates power for local needs and for an extensive public utilities service in the surrounding area.
