Fort Sumter National Monument. Charleston, SC.
Fort Sumter was the scene of the opening battle of the Civil War on April 12, 1861. After a 34 hour seige, the Fort, commanded by Major Robert Anderson and his Union troops, surrendered. The Fort was then occupied by the Confederates and remained in their hands until shortly before the end of the war on February 17, 1865.
The Confederate States of America CSA was a government set up from 1861 to 1865 by 11 Southern slave states that had declared their secession from the US. The Confederate Constitution of 7 state signatories: SC, MS, FL, AL, GA, LA, and TX, formed a "permanent federal government" in Montgomery, AL, in 1861. In response to a call by U. S. President Abraham Lincoln for troops from each state to recapture Sumter and other lost federal properties in the South, 4 additional slave-holding states: VA, AR, TN, and NC, declared their secession and joined the Confederacy.
